How to Spot Woodworm in Your Home

A home can give you years of memories and is your very own safe haven in which to relax and unwind. However, this comes at a price and throughout the years, our homes can fall victim to various issues which will require plenty of care and attention to rectify.

Some will just be quick and simple fixes, but more serious issues such as woodworm often need to be addressed by professionals. But do you know what to look out for or how to spot if your home has woodworm? If not, we have put together a quick guide to help you learn what you need to look for and understand why it’s best to consult the experts.

Spotting Woodworm in Your Home

The most common damage to wood is caused by Anobium Punctatum, otherwise known as the Common Furniture Beetle. It is responsible for up to 75% of all timber damage and is commonly seen in many UK homes. It leaves a trail of 1-2mm holes in any wood that it attacks and often leaves frass (small piles of dust) as well. But this is not the only type of woodworm that you may encounter. Another is the Death Watch Beetle – given its ominous name, an insect you definitely don’t want in your home!

How Does this Occur?

Woodworm is caused when adult beetles start to lay their eggs in small cracks on the surface of the wood. When hatched, the larvae can then bore into the wood to search for cellulose in order to feed. After this, a chamber will be created inside the wood where a grown beetle will begin to tunnel through to escape. The adult will then seek a mate and the process will start all over again. The more this happens, the weaker the timber becomes, causing more long-term effects.
