When it comes to our homes, there are many surprising facts that we don’t know. For instance, did you know that external cables can cause internal dampness?
Of course, many of us are familiar with damp and may even have had damp proofing quotes and work done to resolve problems in the past. However, we may not be so wise as to know where it comes from and how it gets into our homes. Although external cables are essential, they still have the capacity to cause issues.
So, why does this happen and how can it be avoided?
Every home contains cables; some properties also have cables entering the house from the exterior. While they are obviously there for a reason, these cables can be a contributing factor when it comes to damp inside the building. In fact, external cables are actually one of the most common causes of damp.
When it rains or snows, water will collect along the wire and run down the cable leading to the wall. Once it finds its way into the wall, it will then disperse. After a time, the water will collect and can cause damp in the interior wall, often characterised by an unsightly wet patch and a musty, unpleasant odour.
However, noticing the signs of damp is just the first step towards resolving the issue. It can be difficult to find the source of the damp, not least because many external cables are often hidden away or covered by foliage, for example. Of course, external cables are by no means the sole cause of damp – factors like defective brickwork and leaking gutters or drainpipes can also lead to damp.
Luckily, many cases of damp caused by external cables can be avoided by ensuring that your cables are installed correctly. You should also ensure that your guttering is in good condition and regularly maintained to avoid any issues.
In addition, any external foliage should be kept to a minimum around external cables. This way, if any issues do arise, you may be able to spot them before the problem has a chance to worsen. External damp near cables will usually appear darker and wet, contrasting with the rest of the wall.
If you do suspect that your property has a damp problem, it’s always best to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Get a damp proofing quote to ensure the damp is treated quickly and professionally – the sooner the issue is resolved, the less time it has to worsen. If in doubt, it’s always best to enlist the help of an expert. While quick fixes may seem tempting, the chances are that they will only mask the issue and could result in it worsening over time.
